Emma Monks stumbled upon her first online community in the early ’90s: when seeking distraction from a particularly boring essay, she found an interesting-looking icon nestled in the system files labelled CompuServe. The passion… and addiction started that day.
In the time before flat-rate Internet access Emma weathered the storms of epic telephone bills to indulge in her obsession with MUDs, MOOs, Bulletin Boards and IRC. Participation as an avid user quickly evolved into a desire to shape and nurture communities online, leading to interesting hobby projects such as helping to administrate one of the world’s largest Internet Relay Chat networks and her first paid community management role with a BT/News International offering known as LineOne (now Tiscali UK).
Over the last 11 years, Emma has been involved in creating community tools and features, seeding and nurturing new communities, establishing moderation and safety policies and wading into the waters of day-to-day management. She currently holds the post of Senior Manager, Moderation & Safety for teen virtual world Habbo Hotel, which has just celebrated the creation its 100 millionth character.
